Maintaining Your BKR Lawn Mower: A Step-by- Step Guide

Lawn mower maintenance is necessary to extend the lifespan of your machine.  Ensuring a clean cut, and keeps your lawn healthy. With proper maintenance you can use your machine for many years, saving your money in a long run. By following this maintenance routine, your lawn mower will run efficiently:

1: Go through the Manual:

You need to read the manual once before performing any maintenance. It provides specific instructions for your model, including recommended oil type, blade specifications, and maintenance schedules. Follow the guidelines on functionality and check for possible problems.

2: Safety check:

Wear gloves before working on your mower, take these precautions seriously to avoid any danger. After long use turn off the engine and let it cool. Disconnect the spark plug to prevent accidental starts.

3: Proper cleaning of the Deck:

After mowing grass clippings, dirt, and debris accumulate under the deck, affecting performance of the machine. Use a brush or a sharp knife to scrape off dried grass. Use a pressure washer for deep cleaning. Dry the deck thoroughly to prevent rust. To reduce future build up apply a silicone spray under the deck.

 4: Change the Engine Oil:

Change oil once a year or after long hours of use. Dirty oil reduces engine efficiency and extended longevity of the mower. Find oil filler cap and place an oil pan under the mower. Remove the drain plug or tilt the mower if applicable to drain old oil. Refill with the manual recommended oil type.

5: Clean the Air Filter:

A clogged or dirty air filter restrict airflow, making the engine work rough. Check every few months and clean the filter,  in case it still not working properly replace with new one. If your mower has a foam filter, wash it with warm, soapy water, dry it, and lightly oil it. If it has a paper filter, replace it if it looks dirty.

 6: Sharpen the Blades:

Sharpen the blades at least once per month. Blunt blades tear grass instead of cutting it cleanly, leading to lawn disease. Remove the blade using a wrench. Sharpen the blade using sharpening stone or with a grinder. An  unbalanced blade causes vibrations and uneven cutting so make sure to balance the blade before reinstalling.

7:  Check the Spark Plug:

Check for any worn spark plug, it makes starting difficult and affects engine performance. Replace once a year or as per need. Use a spark plug wrench to remove the plug.
Inspect for corrosion or carbon build-ups and clean thoroughly. Replace if worn or dirty.

8: Inspect Tires and Wheels:

Check tires before each mowing session, inflate and secure wheels to ensure smooth mowing. Check tire pressure if your mower has pneumatic tires for better traction. Tighten any loose bolts or wheel assemblies.

 9: Lubrication of Moving Parts:

Apply lubricants every few months to reduce friction and prevents premature wear. Apply lubricant to wheel bearings, cables, and moving joints. Avoid over-lubrication, which can attract dirt. Go through the Manual once.

 10: Storing:

Store the mower in a dry, sheltered space.
If storing for winter, drain the fuel or add a stabilizer at the end of the lawn care season. Keep the battery charged or you can remove the battery for electric mowers.
